Coffee Therapy — the play

SCENE 10
Back in the coffee shop, things are calm. DARNELL is alone.

DARNELL
Aside
Anyhow, all this talk of therapy reminds me of another one – Dr. Dubinscott. I didn’t have much use for what she said.
DR. LOUISE DUBINSCOTT, a tough woman in her fifties, enters. The light is lower on DUBINSCOTT than Darnell.

DUBINSCOTT
At that point in my life, I had no use for selfish men.

DARNELL
You were a psychologist. I was the client. That “point in your life” should have been irrelevant.

DUBINSCOTT
“Should” have been?

DARNELL
Yeah, should have been.

DUBINSCOTT
You know your biggest problem?

DARNELL
What?

DUBINSCOTT
All your little shoulds. I can say that now, I think.
Aside
Can I say that now, ethically?

DARNELL
Say it.

DUBINSCOTT
The whole concept of what should be. You were blinded by shoulds. I could have saved you a lot of money and hours of therapy if I could have just taken that little word “should” and shoved it up your ass and sent you on your way.
DUBINSCOTT sits in the therapist’s chair.

DARNELL
Aside
She didn’t help me, but, looking back, she made some sense.
