Coffee Therapy — the play

SCENE 11
SR. DARNELL lies on the couch, reading.
His ROOMMATE barges in. He holds a cake tin in his hands.

ROOMMATE
Hey, Darnell, look at this.

DARNELL
Damn.

ROOMMATE
It’s a half a pound, Jamaican. Only cost a hundred dollars. It’s on me. I got paid today and this is my gift to the house! I’d say it should last for months.
DARNELL puts his hand in the cake tin and lets a huge handful of marijuana sift through his fingers.

DARNELL
Why is it so fine?

ROOMMATE
We took out all the seeds and stems and put it in the blender. This is pure bong smoking pot. You couldn’t even roll a joint with this if you tried. It wouldn’t burn right. It’s strictly for the bong. Very strictly.

DARNELL
It’s like powder.

ROOMMATE
So Darnell, man, get out the bong.

DARNELL
I’ve got a test tomorrow.

ROOMMATE
So let’s get high and then you can study.

DARNELL
I don’t know.

ROOMMATE
So, like, what course is the test in?

DARNELL
Romantic poetry.

ROOMMATE
Which poet?

DARNELL
Wordsworth, Coleridge.

ROOMMATE
Man, getting high will help. Those guys were so high when they wrote – it will…it will…help you relate. You’ll understand it better.

DARNELL
That’s true. But I haven’t read the poems yet.

ROOMMATE
Screw it, man. It’s eleven o’clock. Take a break.
DARNELL reaches underneath the couch and pulls out a bong. He fills the bowl with pot from the cake tin.

DARNELL
Good idea.
