Coffee Therapy — the play

SCENE 16
Back in WINKERBLOOM’S office.

WINKERBLOOM
So how do the girls like it?

DARNELL
What?

WINKERBLOOM
The grass.

DARNELL
Some like it, I suppose.

WINKERBLOOM
You get high with girls a lot?

DARNELL
Not really.

WINKERBLOOM
Just the guys.

DARNELL
Mostly, yeah.

WINKERBLOOM
So, any romance in your life?

DARNELL
Romance?

WINKERBLOOM
Yeah, romance. Dating. Fooling around. Stuff like that.

DARNELL
Not really.

WINKERBLOOM
Too bad. You’re missing out on dancing and all that stuff.

DARNELL
I hate dancing.

WINKERBLOOM
Oh, don’t give up dancing.
WINKERBLOOM steps across the room and does a quick dance step.
It’s too much fun.

DARNELL
There’s one girl. I had tea at her house.

WINKERBLOOM
smiling
Tea?

DARNELL
Yeah, tea. We were in poetry class together.

WINKERBLOOM
Tea and poetry, huh?

DARNELL
Yeah. I gave her a poem. I almost kissed her – then I thought it would be best not to.

WINKERBLOOM
You mean you could have just reached over and…kissed her?

DARNELL
Maybe. She’s a pretty straight Baptist. I don’t know if she would have gone for that. I guess I feel a little uncomfortable about my looks.

WINKERBLOOM
Not all of us look like movie stars.
Pause. For a moment, DARNELL studies WINKERBLOOM. She smiles and poses.

DARNELL
There was another girl. I said the wrong thing to her.

WINKERBLOOM
What was that?
