Coffee Therapy — the play

SCENE 18
Back in therapy with DR. WINKERBLOOM.

DARNELL
Are you able to continue seeing clients even after they’re out of school?

WINKERBLOOM
Well, this is the University’s counselling center – but I could do that – if the situation arose. I do have a private practice.

DARNELL
Good. I quit school.

WINKERBLOOM
That was a drastic step.

DARNELL
Too much pressure. It’s not permanent, but I needed a break. What are your rates, in your private practice? I’m going to get a job.

WINKERBLOOM
That depends on the job.

DARNELL
I’ll probably be waiting tables.

WINKERBLOOM
I get about thirty-five an hour from waiters. But haven’t you paid your tuition this semester?

DARNELL
Yeah, it’s been paid.

WINKERBLOOM
It’s okay with me you keep coming here.

DARNELL
What about seeing a family? My parents and brother and sister want to meet you.

WINKERBLOOM
Oh, I repair families at home. That’s fifty an hour.

DARNELL
They think you’re my problem.

WINKERBLOOM
Oh yeah?

DARNELL
Yeah.

WINKERBLOOM
I wonder where they got an idea like that?

DARNELL
hesitating, guilty
I don’t know.
