Coffee Therapy — the play

SCENE 5
DARNELL turns back to FREEBOCKER.

DARNELL
That’s the main reason I came here – to get away from my family.

FREEBOCKER
And I think it was a splendid idea. Learning how to manage for yourself, are you? Have you met anyone interesting?

DARNELL
Yes. A girl.

FREEBOCKER
Good. And I trust you’ve slept together.

DARNELL
embarrassed
Yeah.

FREEBOCKER
And did that go well?

DARNELL
Sure.

FREEBOCKER
Excellent. That gives you some mental protection against the family. What you need to do is simply continue down the path you’re on, bundle it all up with five or ten years of analysis – and one day, you’ll wake-up from this whole nightmare and you might be okay. Well, half okay. Maybe.
She smiles and twitches.

DARNELL
So, at this point, there’s nothing I can do. I’m…at a loss for a response.
FREEBOCKER stands up and smiles. She extends her hand. DARNELL shakes it.

FREEBOCKER
Blast the reponse. Doesn’t really matter, does it? It’s time for you to go now. I’ll be back next week.

DARNELL
Same time?

FREEBOCKER
See the receptionist.
She nods and smiles. DARNELL, a bit shaken, stumbles as he leaves the room.
