Coffee Therapy — the play

SCENE 9
SR. CORRIE holds a BABY. She’s exhausted. DARNELL paces the room. He holds a tennis racket. He’s angry, frantic, out of control. He whines like a spoiled child.

DARNELL
So which is it? Make up your mind! You want me to stay here and fix supper while you hold the baby? Or you want me to hold the baby while you fix supper? What?

CORRIE
Just go play tennis.

DARNELL
Now you want me to go! Thanks a hell of a lot. I’m gonna play like shit today, now that you’ve made me feel guilty about it.

CORRIE
What’s the difference? I need your help, but I can see I’m not going to get it.

DARNELL
shouting
So you want me to be miserable either way!
BABY
Whaaa!

CORRIE
Thank you a hell of a lot. I just got her to sleep.

DARNELL
She’ll go back to sleep.

CORRIE
Just go!

DARNELL
I will!
softer
Unless you want me to stay.
BABY
Whaaaaa!

CORRIE
Go! And you don’t have to bother coming back.

DARNELL
Oh, that’s a nice thing to say. I live here! Where am I supposed to go?

CORRIE
in tears
I don’t care. Just go play tennis. Please. Please just go.

DARNELL
confused, considering his options
Then I will.
