Coffee Therapy — the play

SCENE 13
SR. DARNELL and CORRIE sit with DR. BLAZER in his office. They have copies of test results in their hands.

BLAZER
Here is the bottom line.
BLAZER focuses on DARNELL.
You must pay attention to her.
He focuses on CORRIE.
And you pay attention to him.

DARNELL
That sounds simple enough.

BLAZER
But you don’t do it. As it is now, it’s more like, ‘how can I get mine?’

DARNELL
So she needs more time for herself?

CORRIE
And he needs more freedom?

BLAZER
That’s the gist of it. But we don’t have the time to interpret every aspect of the testing here. For one thing, you can’t afford to pay me to do that for you.

CORRIE
True.

BLAZER
You’ve got the results and you’ve got the books. I want you to take them home, read the material carefully, and come up with a plan. Come back in a month and we’ll talk it over.

DARNELL
You call this therapy?

BLAZER
When you came here, you said you were willing to grow. Right?

DARNELL
Sure.

BLAZER
And you said you were broke.

DARNELL
Right.

BLAZER
So the process requires a little effort on your part. Shooting the breeze for an hour a week won’t do it. Besides, you said you’ve tried that.

DARNELL
For years.

BLAZER
Then try this.
CORRIE holds the test results print-outs and looks at them. BLAZER gestures toward them proudly.

CORRIE
I like this. I think this will be helpful.
to DARNELL
Did you know your self-esteem is in the bottom ten percentile?

DARNELL
not shocked
Wow. That’s shocking.

BLAZER
That’s a liability, and you need a plan to deal with it.

DARNELL
I had a toothache when I took that test. Can that affect the results?

BLAZER
impatient
Folks, there’s a lot we can do, but I want to check out your level of commitment first. I want to see your plan.

DARNELL
Yeah, yeah. We’ll make a plan.
