Coffee Therapy — the play

SCENE 6
DR. WINKERBLOOM pulls her chair closer to DARNELL. He sits with her, waiting for her response.

WINKERBLOOM
Pause.
So what.

DARNELL
Huh?

WINKERBLOOM
So
Pause.
what.
DARNELL gestures toward the scene of the crime – the space on the stage where the argument just took place.

DARNELL
I just established for you the core of my problem.

WINKERBLOOM
It was a story.
Bored, she yawns.
How interesting. But it’s just another ‘so what’. Anyway, I thought I was your problem. Remember? Because I fall asleep too much, which is why you need to see me twice a week, for more support. So first I’m your problem, and now they’re your problem. You know, this could be our first real business here.

DARNELL
To figure out who my problem really is?

WINKERBLOOM
Who? How about what? If your problem is somebody else, then I’m not sure I can help you.

DARNELL
You don’t even think I have problems, do you?

WINKERBLOOM
No no. I do think you have problems.

DARNELL
Then what are they?

WINKERBLOOM
Hell if I know. My job is to assist you –
DARNELL interrupts.

DARNELL
But aren’t you supposed to?…don’t you?…
Suddenly, DR. WINKERBLOOM nods off to sleep again.
